Welcome back to day four of our full Theros set review. So far we have journeyed through the maze of blue, black, and red cards which runs us right into green for today. Theros has been providing some quality cards for constructed in basically every color so we will have to see if green can maintain the trend. We will also be looking at each card for limited as well of course.

To help us out, we have two scales; One is for Limited and is the same scaled we have always used, straight from WotC themselves. The other is for Constructed and has been modified from past reviews to help with clarity, so check it out:

Constructed

5: Fives are ever-present cards that heavily warp a format or see heavy play across multiple formats. Jace, the Mind Sculptor, Deathrite Shaman, and Tarmogoyf are good examples of fives.

4: These cards tend to have support roles across multiple formats or be tier one cards in at least one. Spell Pierce is an example of the former while Thragtusk is an example of the latter. I expect to rate a lot of things as fours that are actually fives and vice versa while I feel out this new system but in both cases, these are going to be highly desired cards.

3: These are the bread and butter cards of a set, usually doing all of the essential things needed for a format, but doing them at a good rate. Cards like Oblivion Ring, Izzet Charm, or Diregraf Ghoul would be found here.

2: These cards are generally much more restrictive in use and application than a three, but they serve a similar purpose. You will see more sideboard or niche cards, like Skullcrack, Heartless Summoning, or Gladecover Scout.

1: These are not going to see much play, but they have an outside chance. These tend to be weak or narrow sideboard options or extremely narrow main deck cards. Most ones will not ever make it into a winning list, but they have potential to do so.

0: These are unplayable in constructed regardless of context. These tend to be the cards designed to balance limited, like Grizzly Bear or Siege Mastodon or are narrow with a poor output, like Artificer's Hex.

*Any card that gets an X.5 rating just means I can see it falling to either side of the equation given the right metagame or environment.

Limited

5.0: I will always play this card. Period.

4.5: I will almost always play this card, regardless of what else I get.

4.0: I will strongly consider playing this as the only card of its color.

3.5: I feel a strong pull into this card's color.

3.0: This card makes me want to play this color. (Given that I'm playing that color, I will play this card 100% of the time.)

2.5: Several cards of this power level start to pull me into this color. If playing that color, I essentially always play these. (Given that I'm playing that color, I will play this card 90% of the time.)

2.0: If I'm playing this color, I usually play these. (70%)

1.5: This card will make the cut into the main deck about half the times I play this color. (50%)

1.0: I feel bad when this card is in my main deck. (30%)

0.5: There are situations where I might sideboard this into my deck, but I'll never start it. (10%)

0.0: I will never put this card into my deck (main deck or after sideboarding). (0%)

And with that, let's move on to the cards!

The vanilla body on this is far too weak to consider alone and the ability is both expensive and not always that relevant.

Limited: 2.5

A decent three-drop is fine to have when you need it but then in the late game, if you manage to find some spare mana lying around amongst the monstrous activations and bestow creatures, this thing can be a real threat. Works particularly well with bestow creatures himself.

I will be honest with you, I am not really sure where this is supposed to go. Is it an awkward midrange card that has minimal impact on the board without help? Is it an aggressive card to be paired with Crusades? Is it a control win condition? It doesn't seem particularly good at any of that, so I am not sure what to do with it.

Limited: 3.5

A relatively big body that can handle itself and the ability to create and army out of nowhere. One issue with this is that while you might want to target this multiple times in a turn to swing for the win, all those spells you are casting will be tapping the valid targets, so keep that in mind.

This guy might look mostly innocent, but he might be a very potent metagame call. For just five mana, you are getting a 6/6 reach which is certainly above rate. Imagine a world where Stormbreath Dragon or Angel of Serenity are running around everywhere. This blocks them and then when you untap, you end up with a 9/9 that takes down that big flier. This will be a nice option as the metagame shapes itself.

Limited: 4.0

A giant guy well above rate that gets even bigger is just really good. Add in that you can take out a flier which means you can take out a large number of the potential bombs your opponent could have, while growing mind you, is just awesome. Easily first pickable.

I don't think this will see all too much play. Slice in Twain was basically just better than this (but less splashable) and saw very little play over cheaper alternatives. This might see some occasional play, but expect Naturalize to be more popular than this still.

Limited: 2.0-2.5

A card you can get away with main decking most of the time due to the number of enchantments in the set. If you ever take out a creature and get to scry, you are giving green something it normally has no access to.

Speaking of enchantment creatures, this guy is one of the better ones. With flash, this guy is a five mana +4/+2 combat trick that sticks around, then, should the creature he is beefing up die, you are left with a 4/2. Not bad. And if you ever just want to cast this guy, he is comparable to something like Wolfir Avenger, which saw a little play.

Limited: 3.5

A really solid combat trick that will often turn into a three-for-one or more by the time this is finally off the table. This lets you make a lot of unique plays so be sure to survey the board often when you are holding this.

I will be completely honest with you, I still don't have any clue what this does. Alright, alright, it's a lot of abilities, but none of them are really specular. This kind of reminds me of Trading Post in that it might see play for its versatility, but I am not quite sure where.

Limited: 4.0

Obviously a very strong card in limited where the passive bonus is 30 times more relevant and the crazy amount of ways it can interact with the game state puts a ton of pressure on your opponent.

All of these heroic creatures feel playable because if they are ever broken, then they probably break the format. If you manage to cast five spells in a turn that target this, your opponent is dead. What if those spells you cast were pump spells? Maybe it takes two to three of them now! Five mana and prone to Bolt the turn it comes out makes me not rate this higher, but it could make some waves.

Limited: 3.0

This thing will become the biggest creature on the board quite quickly and in a land with monstrous and bestow, that is quite the feat. Giving this evasion in some way would be recommended.

This is a little more expensive than I would hope for, compared to a card like Commune with Nature, but it dumps the cards into your graveyard, which is big, and hits an additional card type. As we lose a card like Mulch, this and Grisly Salvage will need to do the heavy lifting in terms of filling up your graveyard.

Limited: 1.5

Obviously this is going to scale up depending on how powerful the cream of your crop is, but I would not value it too highly to start a draft and then when you pick up a bomb or two, snag one or two of these.

Basically just another Fog to add to this if a deck is interested in that sort of thing. Traditionally, Fogs that do not protect your planeswalkers have not made an impact on Standard though.

This will probably see some very light sideboard play if a deck has no other way to take out a god card. Sorcery speed and three mana are otherwise dealbreakers.

Much like the previous Naturalize, this is going to be able to take out a lot of enchantment creatures only for a little cheaper and without the scry. The random ability to take out a god will be nice when it comes up though.

This is a really strong combat trick that leaves your guy beefed up, which is always a plus. Because there are so many expensive things you want to do in limited, like monstrous and bestow, having access to that mana more reliably and more quickly can be very powerful, even if this guy doesn't do all too great during combat.

A bear with a somewhat relevant set of abilities seems like it could sneak into constructed somewhere so I won't write this off completely. Skylasher will probably be the card to go first though.

Limited: 2.0-2.5

The bestow cost on this is very reasonable, which is nice. It is not like the base creature here is bad by any means, but unfortunately, you do lose the cheapness of a bear should you choose to aura-fy it.

This is a really solid card at what it aims to do, which is be a burden for blue decks to handle it. That said, if the “cannot be countered” clause and pro blue don't matter to you, the rest of this is mediocre, so only expect this to see known metagame play and sideboard play.

This has some really neat implications to it. Obviously the goal is to get four guys in your yard and play this for two mana, which is not all that unrealistic. Then, for two more mana (hopefully you have gotten more guys in there by now) you have a 10/10. This is similar to Ghoultree but I do like it because of that cheap first cast.

Limited: 3.0

A very big guy for not too much mana I would imagine. You probably spend three to four mana on this most of the time and then making this into a 10/10 seems all downhill from there (for your opponent).

Probably the worst of the gods overall. Trample is fine but often not worth the investment of an entire card (plus, why can't she give herself trample?). The activated ability is really expensive in the context of Standard and then we know the body is never something to rely on. There is potential for some power here, but it is not as applicable as the other gods we have seen.

Limited: 4.5

Obviously in limited, all of that changes as now we want an emphasis on creature combat and this provides just that. Combat tricks and trample are both extremely potent on a mostly unkillable god while the prospect of a looming 6/6 will make your opponent play a little differently.

This is one of the strongest bestow cards due to its versatility. A 3/3 trampler for four mana is reasonable as-is and makes for a good target for other bestow stuff. Then, six mana for that aura is not even too unreasonable, ignoring the fact that you get a 3/3 creature should anything funky happen.

While this does seem like a heck of a lot of work, imagine playing this on a Gladecover Scout on turn 2. You end up with a 4/4 and six mana on turn four. Granted, that is still a very specific set of circumstances, but all I am saying is that this has a very high ceiling at the very least.

Getting a few extra lands in a set with huge costs seems like a nice thing to have even though the effect will scale down as the game progresses. Once again though, my concern is with how often this will actually trigger the third time.

So this is going to be much better in any of the defensive control decks as seven toughness is a hefty amount to need to break through, especially when they hit back for a decent amount too. In other decks, this probably isn't as exciting.

This guy could easily end up being the Thragtusk we have over the next two years but I expect him to see significantly less play. Partially because he is legendary but also because he does not have an as universally desired a set of abilities. Midrange green decks will like this of course and it will be popular, just not all that versatile.

Limited: 4.5

First pick this and win. You can either spring the monstrous right away, killing a two toughness thing and ending up with a 7/7 but I would think holding it for an even bigger effect later is probably pretty awesome as well.

I talked about this guy a bunch in my article on devotion and I think he will probably be fine but not amazing until we get some of the strong devotion enabling cards back that green is losing. Strangleroot Geist and Predator Ooze are gone for example.

Obviously this can be just bonkers in a monogreen deck but I think that usually he will be between a 3/3 and 4/4 unless you decide to hold him for forever,

I am not sure exactly where this fits in, but it seems like the type of card that can do big things. Obviously sacrificing it right away does not produce you mana in the way that Timber Wall does, but if you just wait a turn, you gain access to Dark Ritual, which seems pretty strong.

Limited: 2.0

A bear early on that might get in a few points of damage and then you can cash him in on turn four or five or whatever to accelerate out some unstoppable fatty. Relevance in the early and late game makes this totally fine.

Pump spells have gotten quite a bit better over the years and spending two mana for +2/+2 is not the best deal. Maybe a heroic deck will try to make use of this though.

A pretty decent combat trick when you have the mana available to use it. Ambushing an attacker is the most attractive part of this but it comes up much less often than you might think.

I am actually surprised Typhoid Rats didn't see more play than it did. This is in green, which doesn't get the quality of removal that black does, so I think it might be a factor.

Limited: 2.5

I actually think this guy will be a very important card for green to have on defense. With the size that creatures can get to in this format, green can't just hope to be bigger and naturally fend things off. I expect this to be a mid-pick but very important.

This is a pretty good card but it has some limitations in that, it belongs to a relatively small set of decks. If your deck would play a card like Farseek, it might play this of course, and it will likely be very strong there. Without Birds of Paradise in the format, it will be interesting to see how much play this sees.

Limited: 3.0

I am a big fan of mana ramp in this format, especially when it is mostly immune to being disrupted. Plus, there are plenty of auras that you might want to play on this just because he is safe while wearing them. Imagine him with +1/+1 and deathtouch for example. Mana fixing is always nice as well.

I think this will be an important card to provide green with some sort of removal. Whether you are using your giant guy to kill their slightly less giant guy or turning your pump spell into removal, green needs this effect. Combine with our scorpion friend from above for some fun.

Untapping lands is something we have seen succeed before in Arbor Elf. While this guy is not as efficient and won't see the same type of play, Verdant Haven and cards like it make this appealing for certain ramp decks.

I am not sure where this fits, but if you get Divination for one mana, that is pretty dang good. A ton of green decks might be able to pull that off, so I am holding onto hope.

Limited: 2.5

An instant speed Divination is pretty sweet, especially when it only costs mana. Obviously one or more of the halves of this could be disrupted, but I think that is at least partially made up for by how awesome of a heroic enabler this is.

Wrap Up

Green actually gets quite a bit of things to try to fill the holes of things it lost. While there are no direct replacements, a lot of the same style will continued to be captured while the specific game play is unique. Farseek being replaced by a 0/3 creature is almost exactly what I am talking about here. Green gets plenty of undercosted fatties though, so I expect it to stay alive and kicking as the king of midrange.

Tomorrow we will round out the solid colors of Theros by taking a look at the white cards that it has to offer. Of course, we still have the artifacts, lands, and multicolor cards to cover on Monday along with a bit of an analysis of the set as well as my Top 8 constructed cards from Theros. So I will see you guys tomorrow. Thanks for reading!
