This is my first article. I have always wanted to write one, but I felt I
needed a good reason. Since I won this JSS, I felt that it was time for me
to write one. I have been playing Magic for about 4 years, 2 years
competitively. I am an experienced JSSer who has made numerous top8s. This
is my second year playing in JSS events. I have been to 8 of them between
both years. I did attend the JSS Championships last year. I had a good
start, but I had a bad finish. This year I have been to four so far and I
think I have broken the JSS metagame in the Midwest. There tends to be a
good amount of control, even by the younger, inexperienced players. Aggro
control is what normally does best at a JSS. At all 4 I have been to this
year, some form of aggro-control has won. There never seems to
be a lot of G/R beats or any form of heavy beatdown in the area. Well, let's get on to the tournament!
It was at Fantasy Games in South Bend. There were 18 kids there. A lot of
the top kids in the area showed up, including David Tidd. I have a very
good feeling coming into the tournament. Last year on the same date, I had
also won a JSS. The original idea came from Kibler's deck. I really did
not like the addition of red to it. I felt that white would be a better
splash. The Braids, Vindicates, and Spectral Lynxes were all the MVPs. I
would not change the deck if I were to play it again. I will probably play
it at another JSS next weekend and possibly Regionals. A teammate and I
built this version of the deck. We knew it would be competitive. He also
played it in a JSS the following day and also won with it! Here's the
decklist.
He said that this was his first major tournament. Game 1 he did not cast
anything. First turn Duress, second turn Verdict, third turn Vindicate,
followed by fourth turn Braids sealed the game. Second game was almost as
bad as the first. He cast a few creatures but my early creature and hand
disruption sealed the game.
1-0
Round 2 Josh playing U/W/B control
This was the best match of the day, hands down. First game he was a little
mana screwed and early hand disruption plus a Shade and Braids carried away
the win. Second game I was a little mana screwed. He cast 3 Lynx within
the first few turns. I was able to get rid of two of them, but the third
one was a problem. We had a stalemate for a while. A couple Duresses and
Verdicts later, I was able to resolve Braids. Neither of us had any cards
in hand. We went into topdecking mode. He topdecks a Teferi's Moat! We
both lose some mana from Braids. It ends up being that he had a Lynx and 3
mana while I had 2 mana, Braids, and a Shade with a Vindicate in hand. He
had no mana open to regen his Lynx. I decided to sac the Shades and hope to
topdeck a land. I drew another Vindicate. I ended up losing to the Lynx.
With about 10 minutes left in the round, I knew his deck was too slow to
win. I had an aggressive start and he tries to keep up by casting Lynxes.
My Edicts take care of them and Braids wins again!
2-0
Round 3 Someone with U/G aggro
Game 1 went fast. My Shade and Lynx won out against his 2 Nimble Mongoose
and Blurred Mongoose. Game 2 came down to me having out a Swarm and some
other creatures. He had out 2 Basking Rootwalla and 2 Nimble
Mongoose(threshold). If he did not pump up his Basking Rootwalla, the other
Rootwalla would not have died, since the Shambling Swarm would still be
alive. That cost him the game since I was at 2 life.
3-0
Round 4 Someone with G/W/B control
I offered to draw with him, but he declined. He had an interesting deck.
First game Braids wins again. Second games I cloaked Spiritmonger killed
me! He ended up winning with 42 life! Third game I Duress him and only see
2 Plains and a Rites of Spring. I take it. He never gets the black mana he
needed and I beat him with Braids. We talked after the match and I found
out that he played 5-Color. I drew with my 5th Round opponent and just
played 5-Color. He had a good and expensive 5-Color deck. He played all 40
Dual lands plus a Timewalk! I was running a 3-2-1 contract deck and he beat
me almost every game.
4-0
Round 5 Lance with G/R Beats
Draw
4-0-1
Quarterfinals Rematch against U/W/B control
This time the match only took 10 minutes! I had great draws and he was not
able to keep up. Braids won both games for me.
Semifinals Lance playing G/R Beats
This match was short, too. For G/R Beats, he seemed to be creature short.
Both games he did not have more than 2 creatures out. My Edicts and
Vindicates took care of his creatures while my Lynxes won the game. The
other match took forever, but I was able to see exactly what he was playing.
He won with 5 cards left in his deck. This came in handy. I knew to side
out my Vindicates since he was not running COP: Black or Compost.
Finals Clinton with Enforcer-Go
I was a little afraid coming into this match. He just beat something
similar to what I was playing. Both games he only drew painlands. First
game goes first turn Duress, second turn Lynx, third turn Vindicate and
fourth turn Braids. He held off for a while but him only having painlands
did enough damage to kill himself. Second game he countered most of my
early threats, but an Ichorid took away most of his life. I got out a
shade, but he had a Mystic Enforcer. I topdeck Chainer's Edict for the win.
Props
Me for winning!
For someone actually having a 5-Color deck with him or her.
Fantasy Games for running a very smooth tournament.
Slops:
50+ mph winds.
Kevin for not coming with me because he had to baby-sit.
Thanks for reading, see you in Florida! If anyone has any comments or
suggestions for the article or the deck, give me an e-mail. David Triplo
