Valakut, and pure RG Valakut specifically, supplanted Jund at GP: Atlanta as the second best deck. The good news for the prepared player (read: you, hopefully) is that Valakut decks in all their forms are the easiest decks to beat in Extended.

This deck was playing all the best spells from the start. We are a better aggro deck than the aggro decks, and we are a better control deck than the control decks. How? Tempo.

GP Atlanta offers a Pro look at the format, so let's see what can be learned from this massive Extended tournament. I'll even offer up my take on a Mirrodin Besieged card that I think can break into the Standard scene.

With this shell, instead of relying solely on the back of Fauna Shaman for your combo, we now have a full set of Hedron Crabs, Merfolk Looters, Shamans, and an Enclave Cryptologist that make Ooze a bomb.

For some reason I've had a immense fixation with Elves this season. Elves always manages to break early formats since no one respects it. They're also capable of playing either the combo or the aggro role, and both very well.

The biggest reason for RUG over BUG is that Cryptic fits so well in the deck and is among the utmost powerful cards in Extended. Toss in the addition of Lightning Bolt and you have a deck that can tear apart Extended.

Besides having a low curve, White Weenie also matches up very well with other people's attempts at solving the Jund/Faerie problem. White Weenie not only boasts winnable Jund and Faerie matchups, but also gets a great matchup against Red.

In Extended, Jund's level of adaptability took a quantum leap forward from its Standard predecessors. Truth be told, there are probably many potential iterations of the deck that could be quite successful. But only one 'best.'
