Hello and welcome back to everyone's favorite quarterly happening: a new set! So Mirrodin Besieged is here and it looks pretty sweet for both limited and constructed at a first glance. Over the course of the week we are going to be breaking down the set, card by card, and going over each card's impact on both 40 and 60 card land. There isn't much else to say so let's jump right into our scales for the week.

(I understand these aren't perfect, but while trying to revise them, there really isn't a perfect way to execute them, so sticking to the same formula seems better as at least it provides comparison points).

Constructed

5- : These cards are all-stars and their greatness spans multiple formats usually. Generally the chase cards of a set such as Tarmogoyf or Jace the Mind Sculptor. 5s should not be given out lightly as the really have to have a big impact across formats.

4: These cards are going to be seen in decks of their color more often than not but may be less universal than 5s. These will usually be dominant in certain formats but not so much in others much like Bloodbraid Elf or Baneslayer Angel. Note that with a shift to how Extended is, 4's tend to see both Extended and Standard play, but have not made the jump to eternal.

3: These are the backbone of Standard and usually serve some utility but are more restrictive in archetype, like a Makeshift Mannequin or Mind Spring.

2: These cards are generally much more restrictive in use and application. Occasional sideboard appearances or cameos in some combo deck are the most frequent uses here such as Splinter Twin or Acidic Slime

1: These are basically unplayable and only see use in the most rare of occasions such as bad card poster boy One with Nothing

Limited

5.0: I will always play this card. Period.

4.5: I will almost always play this card, regardless of what else I get.

4.0: I will strongly consider playing this as the only card of its color.

3.5: I feel a strong pull into this card's color.

3.0: This card makes me want to play this color. (Given that I'm playing that color, I will play this card 100% of the time.)

2.5: Several cards of this power level start to pull me into this color. If playing that color, I essentially always play these. (Given that I'm playing that color, I will play this card 90% of the time.)

2.0: If I'm playing this color, I usually play these. (70%)

1.5: This card will make the cut into the main deck about half the times I play this color. (50%)

1.0: I feel bad when this card is in my main deck. (30%)

0.5: There are situations where I might sideboard this into my deck, but I'll never start it. (10%)

0.0: I will never put this card into my deck (main deck or after sideboarding). (0%)

And onto the cards!

I have been tempted plenty of times before to add Blade of the Sixth Pride into various decks. The power and toughness combo that is 3/1 is pretty unique and can be powerful in the right deck. This guy just goes above and beyond the Blade, picking up more relevant creature types and Battle Cry, which can end up be more valuable than we initially realize. This guy could end up being a stable beat down creature, or may never see the Light of Day, but that is the beauty in the set review speculation!

Limited: 2.0

I can't imagine this is going to be that good due to the fragile backside, but I also can't imagine it will be bad. If you compare it to Vulshok Replica you get a decent idea of what this guy is capable of as he will get in some extra damage from his bonus ability and while he does cost 1 less, he is also White so he won't be showing up as often. The Paladin may only end up as a 1.5 but I am giving it the benefit of the doubt.

I was really excited for this guy at first, after all, Wild Nacatl is a good man. Then I began thinking about it though, and one of the biggest upsides to artifact based creatures are that they are artifacts! Court Homunculus for example is smaller than this guy, but he will inevitably get the nod over it due to cards like Master of Etherium, Tempered Steel, and Steel Overseer. I can still see the Recruit making a splash somewhere, it just isn't in the places we initially think.

Limited: 1.0

This card suffers from the same problems that something like Auriok Sunchaser does. When it has metalcraft, it will be quite good, but when it doesn't it is almost unplayable. Add to the fact that he doesn't fuel metalcraft himself and he looks less appetizing. Not to mention I would trade the 1 extra mana for flying every day of the week in limited so unless you are starting all of your Sunchasers, leave this guy behind.

I would have like to see how Oust played out as an instant to see how powerful it was throwing guys on top of a library in response to a fetchland or whatever. That said, I don't think it would be powerful enough to tack on 4 mana and some small bonuses, so this won't be seeing any play.

Limited: 2.5

This will usually just be a little bit of value but there are other times when it will be a total blowout due to stealing metalcraft from someone or something like that. Probably the weakest of the new removal overall, but I would likely always play the 1st one of these and then play more if my pool required it.

I am not sure if this type of effect is worthy of a 2 or not, but I am pretty sure that giving this to White is interesting and may push it into the playable range. This is quite good against a deck like Boros or Elves. The biggest issue with it is making sure their squad attacks but fortunately there are cards like Gideon that Provoke that. This may never see any play, but could be a role player out of sideboards in the future.

Limited: 2.5

This has the opposite issue from a card like Dispense Justice. Fortunately for both cards, the other one exists which makes its own value increase. To play around Dispense Justice you need to attack with 2 or 3 dudes, and to play around this you need to attack with only 1 or 2, making playing around both nearly impossible. Still, most times this will only distribute 1 or 2 counters which makes it fine, but not first pick quality.

White has a lack of instant speed Disenchant effects right now, so if artifacts go on the rise, expect to see this out of various sideboards. That said, this will never really make it out of the board beyond Block Constructed.

Limited: 3.0

A White Shatter with an upside has to be good. Still, with Besieged there is a push toward even more non-artifact guys running around, so although you will still see plenty of metalcraft strategies, Infect looks to be more and more popular. That said, the infect deck also picked up some artifacts, so maybe Divine Offering deserves a 3.5, only time will tell.

Four mana isn't even worth an actual Zombify effect any more much less the ability to just return said target to your hand. This being an instant doesn't add enough value for it to matter.

Limited: 1.5-2.0

I think that most White decks would be fine with the first one of these in their deck, although the value does go down from there. The ability to take a Standstill in the late game and stack your draws to get out of it is a big deal. Even in a worst case scenario, this is going to cycle for 4 mana. Any additional Salvages do go down in value by at least half a point.

No one wants to be paying 3 mana for a -1/-1 counter or for Regeneration with a downside, so you shouldn't be wanting to either.

Limited: 2.0

Even an expensive Fume Spitter is a Fume Spitter none the less. The ability to regenerate your own guy will occasionally come up although I suspect the fact that you can't kill an opponent's creature in combat with this ability will be more of a downside than the self-regenerating clause will be an upside. Still a decent guy that should be fine in most scenarios.

These constructed aggro cards are always difficult to evaluate due to the fact that you never know what color combo will end up being the aggro king. Currently Red/White is atop that hill though, and the Hero can certainly make a splash there in some small numbers. Still, it may take a rise of White Weenie before this finds its home. Regardless, the effect is powerful enough and the 4 toughness evades Bolt, so this should be seeing play somewhere.

Limited: 3.5

This is not a bomb in the classic sense as it can be dealt with fairly easily by 1 for 1 removal, but even after it attacks once, it can usually be dealt with in combat while leaving behind a pair of 1/1s. Granted, that is typically a fine deal, but this is no Hoard Smelter Dragon or the equivalent so keep that in mind when seeing this versus removal or something similar.

Block in the text box? Next!

Limited: 1.0

Scrapdiver Serpent has seen play due to his unblockability clause and the fact that Blue has the ability to slow the game down. White typically wants to be the aggressor though and paying 7 mana for a 4/6 is hardly that. Not unplayable, but if this is making your deck, something probably went wrong or your name is Luis Scott Vargas.

This may not big a big hit in Standard, but as you move backward in the formats, his value goes up. In Vintage for example, this is usually going to be at least as good as Qasali Pridemage if you ignore the ability of Cold Eyed Selkie. The fact that removal for 2 toughness creatures is so rare makes this guy's value go up as he gets to stick around unlike the Pridemage. In general, Pridemage is going to get the nod over this in decks that can cast both, but again, Mono White has seen success before and this is just another option.

Limited: 2.5

This guy may deserve a little higher of a rating, but I am skeptical. The casting cost is a little awkward and makes this feel more like a 3 mana card than a 2 mana one. Beyond that though, the fact that he is so fragile and gives them back their artifact or enchantment is pretty big. You will always play any of these you get, but I can easily see him being better on paper than on the battlefield.

I used to think there was a time when this would be good in constructed, but with 2/2 fliers for a single mana being printed and 2/3 fliers with what ends up being a bonus also taking to the skies, the Skyhunter's time has come and gone it seems.

Limited: 2.5

Once again the mana cost is a bit of a hindrance. The fact that this isn't an artifact is also a pretty big knock against it. Kemba's Skyguard has been cut from many decks despite being a standard in the limited hierarchy for every other set. I see this Skyhunter doing much of the same thing, although the mana saved is better than the 2 life, this guy will probably not be coming down on turn 2 as often as you would like.

Limited: 1.5

This guy will really be a test to see how good Battle Cry is because with that line of text gone, this guy is basically the worst. Still, 4 toughness means he will survive most combats so you should get multiple pumps out of him. He could be a gem but I will need to play with the card to tell.

There is a chance that something like the Tempered Steel deck in Extended tries to make a push in Standard and this will be a key part of that strategy if that is the case. Beyond that though, this is a little too clunky at 3 mana as even a card like Raise the Alarm needed Isochron Scepter to see any play.

Limited: 3.0

I feel like this is going to be one of the key spells for White out of Besieged. This provides everything for you. In some cases it is just a Neck Snap for smaller dudes. Other times this is going to set off your Metalcraft at instant speed. Even going beyond that this has nice synergy with equipment and Battle Cry. I would be very surprised if this wasn't just the nuts.

These types of cards always make it into constructed at some point. Basically, once Green and Black make a push in some form, expect this guy to begin appearing in sideboards and eventually main decks. He will likely see play alongside Honor the Pure even in the current state of the format.

Limited: 2.5-3.5

This guy is obviously going to fluctuate a lot depending on the color scheme of your opponent. If they even have one of the two protection colors, he shoots up to a 3.0 or higher and if they are both Black and Green, he easily hits a 3.5 as he is essentially unkillable. A double striker is going to be solid no matter what though, so don't just take this guy looking for a sideboard helper.

This card might seem a little underwhelming at first, but in many ways, it is comparable to Sunblast Angel or Martial Coup only in a new shell. If Jace were not around, I think this would actually be a maindeck staple as a 2 of or so. Unfortunately though, until Jace rotates out, this is going to be seen as a 1-of here and there but will never see play en masse.

Limited: 4.5

One of the better Wrath effects in limited combining the power level of Sunblast Angel with the timing of a typical Wrath as opposed to having to awkwardly wait for them to attack with the right squad. Bounce is much less played in limited as well, with only Neurok Replica seeing much maindeck play, and that guy has to be sandbagged in their hand to get value. The fact that this creatures an artifact is slightly awkward as obviously a 4/5 flier is better, but I still think this is insane in most situations.

I think the White Zenith and this one are fairly comparable in the types of decks that want to abuse them. That said, this will usually appear as only a 1 of or 2 of where as the White one can be seen as a 2 or 3 of. Jace's Ingenuity will get the nod over this initially, but just like Mind Spring, I expect this to make a push later on in its rotation.

Limited: 2.5

This is sort of like a Trigon of Thought in both its speed and impact. It is definitely slow, but can pull you ahead quite easily when cast for 3 or 4. Not many decks will want this type of effect, but the slower Blue control decks that LSV has championed certainly will. Maybe a 2.0 in the abstract, but I love to draw some cards!

This stance may not be popular, but I actually just think this guy is unplayable. There are too many other options for a Blue mage that makes this look terrible. With instant speed removal this does nothing, and even without it it just nets you 2 cards. Compare this to Sphinx of Lost Truths which nets you 1 more card at the cost of 1 more mana but has a cheaper filtering version as well and never gets blown out by an EOT Doom Blade. Frost Titan and Sphinx of Jwar Isle are both better than this as well and Wurmcoil Engine is in the same boat. Since we aren't playing half of those options as of right now, I don't see what would make this guy sneak in before them. And no, this is not good against Jace before people jump in claiming that. That guy does have a -1 ability after all.

Limited: 4.5

This guy is obviously insane in limited of course though. If you consider the removal that can actually kill this, you will be surprised by the answer. Turn to Slag falls short, and Arrest is hardly efficient. Basically if you are not black and packing removal from Besieged like Go for the Throat or Spread the Sickness, you aren't dealing with this Beast. Even getting the 2 cards off of him before Spread is probably enough to win you a game. Take this guy and never look back.

I can't really see this seeing play over Volition Reigns or Mind Control in the land of 60 cards since most decks playing that type of card are control decks and don't care about the infect clause, usually seeing that as a drawback. Still, this could see some block play or a poison control strategy may arise from the 3rd set, so I am happy to be proven wrong here.

Limited: 4.0

The infect clause should be mostly a break even effect in limited. On the one hand, it probably doesn't lend itself to helping you win due to the rest of your guys likely being normal beaters, but it does make it so that even taking smaller guy will add some -1/-1 counters on to a bigger attacker from the opponent. Occasionally the creature can get there by himself with Infect too if you are hacking a bomb of some sort. Enchantments are a little weaker than normal in this set, but this is still insane.

Renegade Doppelganger did not look like much at first either, but he ended up being pretty important for Dredgevine. This guy is a little tougher to put a finger on, but I think he will make some appearances from time to time as this type of effect is tricky enough that you just never know.

Limited: 3.0

You will never be cutting this guy as he is just always the best creature on the table which is nice. That said, the fact that he does stay a 2/2 for at least a turn makes him pretty prone to removal but when he sticks, he should carry you in a winning direction.

Leave this one for the EDH table. Effects that let your opponent choose your fate are historically bad and this is a good example of why. If you are playing a combo deck and need a particular piece to win, you draw 3 cards instead, if you are a control deck and you tutor for a single card, chances are you are getting it over the 3 cards. The fact that you have to exile the card which both shows them what you want and lowers the chances that you draw it should they make you draw is just all bad. Diabolic Tutor has seen very little constructed play and this is usually worse.

Limited: 1.0

This card goes from either unplayable to ok depending on how many bombs you have. If you only have 1 bomb and go grab it with this, they don't give you it and your deck becomes weaker. If you have a bunch of bombs you can grab the 2nd or 3rd best one and draw into the others when they don't give you it. That said, if you have 3 or 4 bombs, you probably don't need junk like this to win.

While there are not a ton of 4 mana Counterspells in Standard to compete with this, this is probably still too slow to be taken seriously. Maybe a deck that relies heavily on counters will turn to this, but I doubt it.

Limited: 1.5

I suspect this will see play over Stoic Rebuttal if you only plan on running 1 Counterspell or so and have the option between both due to it having a bigger impact on the board and being reserved mostly for bombs. If you are going for a Counterspell heavy deck though, this will still sit alongside Stoic Rebuttals and have a nice effect on the board as well. This won't be a high pick, but it will do good things when it does see play.

I don't think this guy is good, but I think he is solid enough that I wouldn't feel bad having to maindeck 1 or possibly 2. His ability is not the most relevant, but he battles most early drops pretty well and picks up equipment with the best of em, so I think he is a welcomed addition to the late pick Blue squad.

He is however much worse in limited though. One toughness is such an awkward place to be in a land of myr and the like. Shroud also hurts it here since it can't even be suited up with equipment and gets outclassed very quickly. Run this if you must, but feel bad about it!

Annul has seen play in the past and I suspect this will be the recipient of some sideboard love in the future. If this were just a review for Block Constructed this would probably be a 3, but this should even see play as far back as Vintage to bounce Blightsteel Colossus and counter Black Lotus all in one

Limited: 2.5

I think this guy is a ton of value in limited right now. Halt Order had some fast appeal but quickly faded when people realized that 3 mana was a little awkward and not dealing with removal was even more so. This can be used as a Disperse or a Counterspell which is so much better for late game top decking and you can even dodge some removal by bouncing your own artifact at times.

Limited: ?

Obviously this guy is totally dependent on what 6 or mores you have hidden away in your 40. With even a single one though he hits the 2 range and can shoot higher if that is bomb of some short. I would tend to take this guy medium to high and then hope he pays off in the later packs.

Turbofog doesn't really exist without enough Howling Mine effects and this wouldn't even make the cut in that deck, which speaks volumes for how bad this is.

Limited: 1.0

I would try to not play this if at all possible, but if you need to dig for a 23rd card, there are worse effects. Every once in a blue moon this will lead to a blow out but most times it is difficult to set up and execute on. In Lorwyn, this effect had the “loses all creature types” bonus that was huge and made the card playable, but that loss isn't worth the 1 saved mana. If this managed to turn all artifacts into non-artifacts or something, it would definitely had been more interesting.

I think Shared Discovery is a card that could be seeing play if the format were a little different but that logic can also be applied here. The difference is that this requires less set up which actually makes up for the extra 3 to the mana cost quite nicely. Concentrate was good enough that even one with a drawback can be quite powerful. Definitely a card to brew around.

Limited: 2.0

Another card that I would probably always play the first of and then contemplate any further copies. There are usually enough dead creatures laying around from 1/1 tokens to guys with Arrest on them that this is pretty good value. Perhaps it only deserves a 1.5, but I think pretty highly of it.

Wrap Up

We are going to wait until Friday for the best of constructed list because otherwise we end up with a pretty repetitive installment due to the small nature of the set. Still, looking at just Blue and White, we see some small impacts here and there with cards like the Zenith's or Hero of Bladehold that may make some appearances in the future. Overall though, most of the playable cards are sideboard material or build around me cards that need to be experimented with before we know their true potential.

Battle Cry seems like it would support aggressive strategies, but the lack of good Battle Cry effects in White means that control seems to benefit the most from both White and Blue. Tomorrow we will be back for Black and Red and then continue with the set every day this week. Thanks for reading!
