Nick Veccie Wins TCGplayer.com $5K Atlanta
[Coverage Summary]

248 players came to Atlanta for the second installment of the TCGPlayer.com $5K series for the last major Standard tournament before Worldwake rouses the format in just a few short days. Jund -- once again -- was the most played archetype with slightly more than 20% field lurking in the Savage Lands of the Standard format. The next two most popular archetypes -- Grixis Control and Red Deck Wins -- both came in just over 10% of the field. The fourth most popular archetype was Vampires around 8% and it was the most successful of the top decks in terms of putting players through to the Top 8. The Top 8 featured three copies each of Jund and Vampires and one each of Red Deck Wins and Valakut Ramp.

There were only eleven copies of Valakut in the tournament but Derek Huang -- a 25-year old medical student -- was on cruise control throughout the tournament with 7 wins and 2 intentional draws. He was up a game in the quarterfinals but then, assured of an agreement to an even payout across the Top 8, conceded to his grateful opponent. Whether or not Valakut could have crossed the finish line is a question that will have to wait until after the addition of Worldwake. It was the other singleton archetype in the Top 8 that became the story as it surged up the other bracket. 23-year old local player Nick Veccie lived up to the verb in Red Deck Wins with some careful applications of burn to the face. In the semifinals he scratched, clawed, and ultimately topdecked a Lightning Bolt with his elimination lurking on the next turn.

The finals came down to Veccie's red cards vs. the Vampires of Jeff Akers. Nick's deck handed him a steady stream of burn -- including sideboarded Punishing Fire -- in two tight games and squeaked past an increasingly popular deck archetype that looks only to get stronger with the release of the new set. Until then, Nick Veccie proved what Magic players have known for years....Red Deck Wins.

Congratulations to Nick Veccie, the TCGPlayer.com $5K Series Atlanta winner!

Whatever. I met him there and he was not boring at all. He was a good,humble player and was very polite. He deserved to win.

Especially considering he was playing with RDW!! I ran this exact deck in an 8 man single elimination toureny at SCG Dallas 2010 except I was short 2 earthquakes which cost me the tourney. Got overrun by thrinax _ sap friends. Anyways congrats to Nick! RDW FTW!

Yo, this is Nick here. Thanks for the kind words, and also the unkind ones as they gave me a good laugh. Just wanted to say how amazing RDW really is, and how underrated it was. (or maybe it wasn't, I haven't really play T2 in 3-4 months as I really only show up for big tournaments) Most of my games were not very close, and the ones that were close were due to me being stuck on two lands. I played a pretty stock list, aside from the Punishing Fires in the sideboard, and that's just a card I think is pretty solid. Also, there are supposed to be two Magma Rifts in place of the random Unstable Footing and Obsidian Fireheart, but I couldn't find them at any vendor.

Overall, I'm glad I decided to scrap Valakut for RDW on the ride over to the event, even though I hadn't tested it at all. I think it's a much more consistently powerful deck. If you have any questions or anything, feel free to Facebook me and ask away, as long as you don't plan to use it to find and murder me.

Here's a list of my matchups for the day. I could do a brief report if anyone actually cared, but for now Ill just list the decks I played.

Round 1 = UWR Control 2-1
Round 2 = RDW Mirror Match 2-1
Round 3 = UWB Control 2-0
Round 4 = Grixis Burn (Flores version) 2-0
Round 5 = Jund w Baneslayer (no clue) 2-0
Round 6 = Jund 1-2 (only loss of the day)
Round 7 = Jund 2-1
Round 8 = RDW Mirror 2-1
Round 9 = Valakut Ramp (ID)

Semis = Jund 2-0
Quarters = Jund 2-1
Finals = Vampires 2-0
