Hello and welcome to another addition of Droppin' Baums. This week's baum deck is White-Black Vehicles. The reason for adjusting to this shell is because of the power level of the deck I showed you last week. Since then, White-Blue Control has been putting up some SERIOUS numbers online, as well as at premier events worldwide. It became very clear to me that I can't play a deck that turns its powerful creatures sideways – I needed to find a strategy that doesn't get completely shut down by Seal Away, a truly format-defining card so far. To do that, I chose the powerful combo of Heart of Kiran, Knight of Malice, and my personal favorite in History of Benalia – a combination of cards dominate the white-blue matchup and still have standing power against the rest of the field. Let's drive to the list! Vroom vroom!
You will notice a bit of a change from the standard Vehicles lists; I added Aether Hub and Glint-Sleeve Siphoner. While I am still not sure if I 100 percent agree with the Aether Hub, I do believe that Glint-Sleeve Siphoner is still one of the most powerful and most important two-drops in the format and I wanted to have some serious game against control decks. Teferi, Hero of Dominaria is the new, well, hero of the format. I don't want to head into a tournament without a solid plan to beat it, and neither should you. Some things I learned after playing the games is that Toolcraft Exemplar felt either amazing or horrendous – it is high variance and at times a liability in this deck. Not having its best pal Bomat Courier to make it look insane is a sad but true reality! I had some great games and I did what I wanted to do against White-Blue Control.
This matchup is a little rough game one but it is a beating post-board. They have to care about every single threat we have. With this sideboard plan we are pretty weak to Lyra Dawnbringer, but most people side them out. One thing to note is that you don't need to rush your Duress, you save them until the turn that Settle the Wreckage would blow you out. Then you get to blow them out!
+3 Settle the Wreckage
+1 Lyra Dawnbringer
This matchup is very close. Lyra Dawnbringer is very important. If you can land the powerful Angel while not being super behind on board that will usually be enough to clean up the game. Our deck doesn't play defense very well. Look out for the interaction with Seal Away and Knight of Malice (without another white permanent) It can be a backbreaker for them.
I think the best use of your time if you get paired against this deck is to calmly and collectively right click and hit the Concede button. You can use this time to get a sandwich, catch up on some dishes, or even get a quick tv show in before your next round. Use this Time to Reflect on why/how a matchup could be so lopsided in Standard.
This matchup is great. It feels very similar to White-Blue Control in the way we play our game. The only big change is that Lyra Dawnbringer is actually great. It shuts off Combat Celebrant combo single-handedly. Just like it has been in the past, Glint-Sleeve Siphoner is an all-star in this matchup. You can sit behind it and react to what is thrown at you.
The format is still very new and still very exciting. We have new decks popping up every day. This allows for innovation week in and week out. Needless to say, I will have a spicy brew ready for you next week! As always, thank you so much for watching and reading! Go drop some Baums!
