In today's instructional videos we are going to play a Modern brew I've been working on with Justin Heilig, the original creator of the Standard Mono White Devotion deck that I piloted to a Top 4 finish at the WMCQ and that Sam Black piloted to a Top 4 finish at the World Championship that same year.
There are a lot of choices to make when porting the deck from Standard to Modern, but I think we finally found a sweet spot for the deck. Today we have lots of lessons to learn and many faces to smash, so let's get right to the deck list.
The matches against Lantern and Eldrazi got cut off because apparently the replays involving Nevermore are bugged on Magic Online. Whenever I resolve the card, an error message comes up and the replay stops. I won both those matches and lost to Infect, Mono Green Tron, and a four-color Geist of Saint Traft deck with Snapcaster Mages. Overall this version of the deck went 7-3 across two leagues, which is pretty powerful. It took some tuning to get to this point but I found that the most effective build involves maxing out on borderposts, Knight of the White Orchids, Weathered Wayfarers, Secure the Wastes, and Walking Ballistas. Based on the current metagame I also like the four Leyline of Sanctity main. It increases our devotion and protects us from discard spells.
For the most part I'm happy with the current configuration of the deck. The only change I would make is to replace two of the sideboard Wrath of Gods with two Day of Judgment as a way to play around Meddling Mage in the Humans matchup.
I would highly recommend taking this deck for a spin at your local FNM or weekly tournament. I've been coming up with some nice brews in Modern lately and this is one of my favorites. What other cards do you think I should try out in this deck?
