There are a lot of Standard decks floating around right now. From the Merfolk deck I showcased last week to the crazy Grixis Improvise deck that won the Standard Classic to the Energy decks all over the place, there are so many decks I could feature this week.
But none of those decks go “rawr” quite like this one.
Welcome to Jurassic Park.
Something has survived, but opponents won't be.
This deck comes courtesy of Alex Fann, who took it to the Top 64 of the StarCityGames Standard Open in Dallas last weekend. In a field of Glorybringers and The Scarab God and Hazoret the Fervent, Fann showed up with a tribal Dinos deck that looked very much like an Ixalan block brew.
I love it, and it works for a few reasons. For starters, the power level on cards like Ripjaw Raptor, Regisaur Alpha and Carnage Tyrant is simply very high. These are cards opponents will struggle to answer if they're played on curve, or optimally ahead of curve thanks to Otepec Huntmaster and Drover of the Mighty. Haste on a Ripjaw Raptor is no joke, and Carnage Tyrant will, well, wreak carnage when ramped out. And with Samut, the Tested in play, all of these Dinos become all the more fearsome.
Commune with Dinosaurs ensures land drops in the early game and Dinosaur consistency in the late game, while the combination of Abrade and Dinosaur favorite Savage Stomp gives us enough removal to keep opponents from developing their own board unchecked.
One of my favorite cards in the deck – and one that's creeping into more and more builds – is Deathgorge Scavenger. Great against Ramunap Red for gaining life, and good against graveyard decks like God-Pharaoh's Gift, it fills a nice spot on the curve while providing both immediate and continuing value.
The sideboard has answers to a lot of different matchups, allowing us to go to the full four Carnage Tyrants against Control but also giving Magma Spray and Sweltering Suns for decks that want to aggro us out. For the midrange matchups, Vance's Blasting Cannons, Chandra, Torch of Defiance and Glorybringer will help establish board control.
I've taken the list exactly as Fann ran it, and I'm excited by the prospect of showing up to FNM with all the Dinosaurs you could ask for!
Thanks for reading.
