Sometimes I choose Mining Modern decks because I think they're more competitive than given credit. Sometimes I choose them because I think there's something there worth testing or exploring further. Sometimes I pick decks that I believe attack the metagame in a specific way.
And then sometimes I just want to have fun.
And nothing is more fun than Warp World.
I don't know if you've ever resolved a Warp World, or even seen the card before. But if you haven't, let me tell you, it is one of the most enjoyable experiences in Magic. It's the ultimate ‚Äúlet's just see what happens!‚ÄĚ card. Sometimes it helps you and sometimes it messes you up, but it's always an enjoyable experience, though hitting it in a four-player Planechase Commander game has definitely stretched my limit before‚Ä¶
Anyway, how do we play Warp World in Modern? Elves, of course!
To properly abuse Warp World, you need a deck full of permanents, and you ideally want a bunch of enters-the-battlefield triggers so that you're stacking the odds that you'll come out with a better board than your opponent post-Warp. And, of course, you need to get to eight mana to cast it, which is a problem a lot of the time.
Unless, of course, you're playing Elves, which has all the pieces necessary to succeed on both fronts. Nothing makes mana better than Elves thanks to the Elvish Mystic/Heritage Druid/Elvish Archdruid core, and Elves also conveniently has access to a few ‚ÄúI win‚ÄĚ cards, most notably Shaman of the Pack. Make a bunch of mana with Elves, ramp into a Warp World, resolve it and win with Shaman of the Pack triggers? Now we're talking!
So that's our deck. Elvish Visionary and Wood Elves both help us get to Warp World and provide value after resolving it. Regal Force and Dragonlord Atarka give us a few more high-impact threats at the top end, while Purphoros, God of the Forge serves as Shaman of the Pack 5-6 to help us win the game. Out of the sideboard, we get the typical Elves sideboard fare but also can board into Bonfire of the Damned, which creates plenty of blowouts in creature matches.
So there you have it. Do you want to Warp World in Modern? I think a better question might be: who doesn't?
