This week, we are going to get down and dirty with M13. The latest core set is a great follow-up to M12, jam-packed with cool reprints and plenty of references to previous settings, like Ravnica or Alara. It reminds me of the old core releases, where there were almost no new cards, just a mish mash of reprinted gems. Luckily, M13 has plenty of awesome new cards, and none of the ugly white borders that plagued yesteryear's core editions.

There is such a balance of good cards that are old or new, I decided to split the ticket and talk about both. If my count is right, there are about 122 reprinted cards in M13, which is just over half of the non-basic-land cards. I wrote the reprints section first, thinking it would be a good lead in to the discussion of new cards, but it ended up being over 2,000 words, meaning an article's worth of content. The new cards are the real star of any upcoming release, so I am going to chop out the reprints bit for next week's article.
Now, for the new cards that I really like, starting with the W in WUBRG, White.

Ajani, Caller of the Pride – I guess it is not too surprising that a new planeswalker would make the list, especially since this version of Ajani is so amazing. He actually reminds me of a mix between
Ajani Goldmane and
Elspeth, Knight-Errant, due to his +1 counter mechanic, and the flying and double strike ability. His +1 is a little underwhelming, but it can be activated without a legal target, due to the ‘up to one creature' wording. Also worth noting is Ajani's compatibility with
Sun Titan, which none of his other incarnations could ever take advantage of. I plan on using Ajani in my
Ruhan of the Fomori deck, as well as my
Karador, Ghost Chieftain reanimator deck and my
Darien, King of Kjeldor token deck, just because this Ajani is that good. Oh, and his ultimate is nifty, but I doubt it will get much use outside of
Doubling Season shenanigans, and what relevant card isn't good during the Season?

Odric, Master Tactician – I find Odric to be rather interesting, in that his ability gives you something to work with, but isn't overly broken or powerful. He has to attack to activate his ability, leaving him vulnerable to cards like
Comet Storm that can wipe out the other attackers and leaving Odric defenseless. Rather than running his own deck, I think Odric will make a good support card for White colored token decks, like Darien,
Rhys the Redeemed, or
Ghave, Guru of Spores. Not to say that Odric won't make a decent general, it's just that he doesn't really do enough on his own to make him a power-player in the field of monowhite; on the other hand, at 3/4 he is rather beefy for a White four drop, and looks sufficiently cool enough to gain some attractors, so maybe I am wrong. In fact, is that Sean Connery? Also, just noticed the Avacyn crook/sigil thingy on his sword, so I believe Odric is Innistradan. Did I mention M13 was flavorful?

Sublime Archangel – Yeah, pretty good card. Probably the best iteration of a White
Overrun to date, this Angel had me singing ‘Wrong Way' and ‘Santeria' all night. This is another card built for a token strategy, especially the kind that favor quantity over quality, like Darien's soldiers, Rhys's elves, or Ghave's saprolings. The fact that they will most likely only connect for one point of damage means that they can potentially cause the same amount of damage whether they attack or not. Things like
White Sun's Zenith are useful even at sorcery speed, and will basically lend half of that feline power without the haste. The other way to use this card is in voltron style decks, like
Rafiq of the Many, or Ruhan, where the extra boost from exalted will mean a faster victory. Maybe we can try combining it with a
Silent Arbiter, since only one creature can attack anyways.

Jace's Phantasm – This card is pretty cool, but I don't think it compares to a
Serra Ascendant, which many have claimed recently. Now, if it milled in damage, like a
Mindcrank type effect, then it would be more like the Ascendant. I like this card as a nice 1/1 flyer on 1, and the extra boost is just something to give it gas in the later game. I don't really think it's necessary to play around this card with mill effects to pump it faster – eventually someone will have ten cards in their yard, especially against decks with
Hermit Druid or
Mirror-Mad Phantasm. I think this card will likely have a bigger impact in competitive play than casual, but I plan on getting one of these for my UB ninjas, because of its emphasis on tempo and reactivity.

Omniscience – Pronounced Om-nish-ence, I am not really all that excited about this card. It's a huge, splashy enchantment that basically breaks the game, and when combined with stuff like
Jhoira of the Ghitu or
Academy Rector, it's even worse. The reason I bring this card up at all is because my brother wants to use it in his Riku deck that I presented a few weeks ago, and it's pretty much his favorite card in the set. Oh goodie, can't wait (sarcasm).

Void Stalker – I really like this card for EDH, and it just seems like there are so many plays that can be made with this guy. Most obviously is a nice tuck effect to get rid of over-powered generals like
Memnarch, but we can also shuffle our own cards into our library to protect them from exile or theft effects. I like the size and cost of its body, and also how well the mana curves from its two CMC to its 2U activation cost. The art is very well done, with some nice color to it; in fact, it kind of reminds me of the art on
Temporal Cascade, and even comes with its own weird tentacle monster.

Diabolic Revelation – I complained about this card a few weeks ago, mostly because it is Bigfoot/Loch Ness Monster-type ridiculous. It reminds me of
Increasing Ambition, only on some of them
Fevered Strength steroids, (after all these years, that is still one ugly mother.) I don't really plan on using it much, if at all, but don't stop this from building with it, if desired. The art is not all that interesting, but it does have both a sweet name and flavor text. Almost makes me want to like Nefarox. Nah.

Liliana of the Dark Realms – My pick for the best all around card in M13, the new black Planeswalker is certainly the best version of Ms. Vess. Her Swamp tutoring ability almost makes her a more effective mana device than
Garruk Wildspeaker, and since it's her +1 ability, there is almost no reason to not use it. Since this ability only refers to Swamps, and not basic lands, she can grab a dual or shock land, as well as the awesome/terrible
Leechridden Swamp. Her -3 ability is also one of the most effective removal abilities on any of the Planeswalkers, barring obvious favorites like
Karn Liberated and
Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker. Tie her in with the ubiquitous
Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, and maybe she can even knock down
Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre, or
Avacyn, Angel of Hope. Her ultimate ability is gorgeous as well, turning Swamps into a broken version of
Lake of the Dead, and can be set off right away on
Doubling Season. The amount of decks I stick her in will only be limited to the amount of copies I can get my hands on, (kind of like how Garruk WS is in every Green deck. Ever.) She is definitely going in my Karador deck to fetch me all those tasty duals, and Kaervek could certainly use some mana fixing.

Xathrid Gorgon – Flavor and function mix together perfectly in the form of
Xathrid Gorgon. Six mana for a 3/6 deathtoucher is a far cry from the current standard of Black aggro –
Grave Titan – but its ability is super powerful, especially since it keeps generals in play, where that are most worthless, since there won't be an option to replay him from the general zone. This also shuts down activated abilities, so it's a lot like my favorite
Pacifism,
Prison Term. Since a lot of creatures never end up attacking - especially mana dorks like
Llanowar Elves or pingers like
Nin, the Pain Artist – the Gorgon's ability has much more utility. This card is great for EDH because it will most likely be a bulk rare, and is powerful and splashy without being annoying. The Gorgon was a prerelease card, but I think the normal M13 art is a bit superior. I think the
Xathrid Gorgon will fit into my
Kaervek the Merciless group slug deck, because it's extra merciless to turn things to cold, dead stone.

Krenko, Mob Boss – Straight up, Krenko is the real deal. Although he is no
Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker, he is arguably the best general to use for a goblin theme deck. I asked my Off Color Cast mate Calvin “Captain Red Zone” Russell whether he would replace the commander of his goblin tribal deck - currently the cult-classic
Ib Halfheart, Goblin Tactician - with Krenko. After some discussion, he decided Krenko was the new boss in town. Krenko is the Tony Soprano of goblinoid legends, waking up with a
Blood Moon in his eye. Seriously, though, I will probably write about Krenko in the near future, so we will get to him later.

Slumbering Dragon – I am not totally sure why, but I think this thing is pretty darn cool. Part of the strategy of Commander is political and social considerations, and this is one of those cards that deters attacks from other players. It is kind of like
Edric, Spymaster of Trest in a lot of ways, or possibly a
Propaganda, in that it rewards other players to attack someone besides you. I like that it comes down early and will just keep getting bigger and bigger, so its also a lot like a
Taurean Mauler, mixed with Edric, or something, I don't know. I feel like this will be a good addition to any Red aggro and voltron decks, as well as any version of
Kaalia of the Vast, just to get it to attack for three. I will probably slot it into my Ruhan voltron deck, and maybe even Kaervek, because that deck loves backhanded political tools. Can you tell I have been playing Kaervek a lot?

Thundermaw Hellkite – Well, to start off with, this is definitely the best way to say lightning-breathing dragon. I was pretty disappointed with Avacyn Restored's token dragon,
Archwing Dragon, mostly because it was only 4/4, and therefore not compatible with Mayael, the Anima. The
Thundermaw Hellkite, on the other hand, is 5/5, has flying and haste, and all for only five CMC – imagine if Urabrask, the Hidden had those kinds of numbers. Beyond that, this ability is not only uber-sick, it's also pretty cool and innovative. Unlike the
Thundermare, or
Shrieking Mogg, the Hellkite only affects the opponent's creatures, and will almost never
Backfire and blow up in your face. This is another one of those cards that just screams, “oh, Kaalia, pick me!” As you may know, a big problem with Kaalia is the way her ability only triggers when she attacks, and she's so small that she can be killed by a few faeries, (think about that for a second.) Cards like
Darksteel Plate and
Invulnerability usually go in Kaalia decks to offset this weakness, and the
Thundermaw Hellkite will basically do the same thing, only on a highly aggressive body. Best of all, Kaalia curves out with the Hellkite, meaning we can play Kaalia turn four, and then the Hellkite on turn five, attack with both to clear the way, leaving Kaalia free to drop some super baddy like
Rune-Scarred Demon.

Boundless Realms – Even though it has been spoiled for a long time now, I am still held speechless every time I read the card. It's not nearly as busted as
Diabolic Revelation, but it's in the general ball park. There are two factors that make me go back and forth on this card, the first being that it is a pretty expensive ramp spell, and by the time you can cast it, you could have already dropped a
Primeval Titan, cracked a
Krosan Verge, or had a few good turns with an
Oracle of Mul Daya. But then I think, oh man,
Boundless Realms gets better if any of those examples happen! I think the main interaction that will spoil the card is the way it makes
Avenger of Zendikar - an already abusively powerful card - into basically a two-card combo. All this inner turmoil is tempered by the fact that I love Green most of all, and how good this card could be in
Omnath, Locus of Mana. Maybe I'll just take out Avenger…

Mwonvuli Beast Tracker – This card reminds me of
Eternal Witness and
Yavimaya Elder, in that they are almost like a cycle of 1GG 2/1's that are different Green abilities on a stick. The Beast
Tracker has this toolbox thing going on, grabbing removal in
Acidic Slime, ramp in
Primeval Titan,
Silklash Spider for anti-air defense, or
Thrun, the Last Troll for a solid beater. Unfortunately, the Beast
Tracker is a tutor in the truest form – like Wordly Tutor, it puts the card on top of the deck, and not into the hand. Unlike
Worldly Tutor, the Beast
Tracker is not an instant, and is therefore a bit more awkward. Of course, there are plenty of ways to give Green creatures flash…

Yeva, Nature's Herald – Woo hoo! I love this card, and even though Liliana is the best card in M13, Yeva is definitely my favorite. I use
Vedalken Orrery and
Winding Canyons to make sure Omnath sticks to the board, and in this sense, Yeva will function as an overlapping part of my end-game strategy. Yeva also has flash, so she will play a lot like Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir, only without the control aspect that can turn a table against you. She is also beefier than Teferi, at a cheaper price no less, but this is a trademark trait of Green creatures anyways. Couple this with the fact that she has every intention of using that bear as a mount, and I think it is clear why Yeva is my favorite card in M13.

Staff of Nin – The term ‘made for Commander' gets thrown about a lot, and I think it is usually an exaggeration.
Staff of Nin, though, is definitely some EDH fan service, referencing a card printed in the Commander box sets,
Nin, the Pain Artist. This is also one of those Release Event card things, and that version has MUCH better art. I don't really know what is with the normal M13 version, but I am pretty sure that is a dude holding that thing, meaning that Nin has some pain to paint on some no-good bandit… Or maybe it's supposed to be this Volux character in the flavor text? Either way, the foiled art is far superior, with better colors and composition. Honestly, this may be some of my favorite art in a long time. So you Commander players out there, maybe it's worth going to the release thingy to get this awesome looking card.
What's that? You mean this card has a text box, and actually does something? Right, so, yeah, it is kind of like a
Rod of Ruin mixed with
Urza's Blueprints, only without the hassle of expensive activation costs and echo.
Staff of Nin is not the best card in the world, but it is pretty solid, and is handy for knocking out pesky creatures. I am tempted to run it in Omnath to draw some cards, as well as add some repeatable land destruction with
Kamahl, Fist of Krosa, but that seems kind of mean. I can see this card being popular in Blue-based artifact builds, because copying it with cards like
Phyrexian Metamorph,
Copy Artifact, or
Sculpting Steel will dramatically increase the effectiveness of the Staff for much less mana. Needless to say, this card also belongs in any
Nin, the Pain Artist deck.

Trading Post – I love the all out flavor of this card, and the way each ability feeds into the next in a circle of trade.
Trading Post really feels like a trip to the bazaar, but I think the dark, Innistradian tones are out of place, and something more like a Mercadian Masque style brightness would fit better; I mean, who doesn't think of
Rishadan Port or
High Market when they see this card? It seems like it will slot into most decks, but is probably best for reactive decks where it can just be activated before your turn starts, reanimator decks as a sac outlet for artifacts and creatures, or a token deck that will take advantage of the goats, with maybe a
Springjack Pasture. The discard effect that gains life could be pretty good with a
Drogskol Reaver or
Well of Lost Dreams. Really, there is a lot that can be done with this card, so I will definitely give it a shot.

Cathedral of War – The only new land of interest in M13, (okay, I am tired and don't want to talk about Hellion Crater,)
Cathedral of War is a pretty solid land, and is probably going to be insane in 60x4 decks. It goes well in any deck that exalted is normally good in, (including decks that may not have much of it available,) like a Skythrix Skythiryx
Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon deck, or ol' Tressie,
Lord of Tresserhorn. It might not be worth packing the Cathedral if exalted won't be a useful effect, because a colorless land that comes into play tapped is pretty much the lowest of the low, especially in three or five color decks that need the right colors to function.
Well, I am way over my standard allotment of letter-clusters, so I think now is a good place to end this. Next week, we take a trip down memory lane, where I will jot down my favorite reprints of M13. As I mentioned, I already wrote it, so I can say with utmost certainty that it is: pretty good.
Thanks for reading!
