Hey everyone! Thanks for stopping by! This week, I am going to do something different, because for the first time, I won't have a deck list anywhere in the article. I really want to dive into Avacyn Restored, but unlike the
Ghave, Guru of Spores deck I made for Dark Ascension, I won't be able to use a large fraction of AVR in one list. Instead, I made a list of the top twenty cards in the set as far as I can see, delving into the possible uses of the new cards.
We will start at the top with number 20.

20)
Slayers' Stronghold - This land is pretty good, as far as colorless utility lands go, and I think it compliments it predecessor,
Sunhome, Fortress of the Legion, rather well. The main issues are the temporary nature of haste, and the unimpressive stature of vigilance. Red also has plenty of sources of haste, so while Slayer's Stronghold is a decent land, it can sometimes be rendered redundant. I am definitely going to slot it into my
Ruhan of the Fomori deck, as well as my
Gisela, Blade of Goldnight deck I have for next week.

19)
Griselbrand - At face value,
Griselbrand is a decent card, and his ability may as well read "When
Griselbrand deals combat damage, draw seven cards." His mana cost is high, but I doubt he will be cast for eight very often. I can see him getting
Buried Alive and then Reanimated; even if someone targets him for removal, we can get instant gratification rather than having to wait until end of turn, like that poser
Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur. More realistically,
Griselbrand will be seen in every Kaalia deck to be built until the coming
Zombie Apocalypse obliterates society as we know it. I will also be adding him to my Zur's
Near-Death Experience deck.

Avacyn, Angel of Hope - Maybe I am just jaded from playing
Elspeth, Knight-Errant into
Doubling Season too many times, but I was not terribly impressed with the set's titular angel, Avacyn. Like
Griselbrand, she will most likely be cheated into play via Kaalia or
Raise Dead, but she can also be in Mayael, the Anima decks, just like the one we discussed last week!

Ulvenwald Tracker - I am so hyped about
Ulvenwald Tracker for my
Omnath, Locus of Mana deck. Omnath is usually the largest creature on the table, so a lot of the time the
Tracker will be something like an
Avatar of Woe. The fact that it is a one-drop makes it even better, as I am actually hurting for good cards to start the curve, and I am already running
Prey Upon. This card will also be sweet with someone like
Animar, Soul of Elements, who will love fighting any Black or White creatures.

Herald of War - I was amazed when I first read
Herald of War, probably because I had just played my
Darien, King of Kjeldor deck. The Herald can go in any deck with a human or angel at the helm, and may make cards like
Avacyn, Angel of Hope, playable as a general. It seems especially good when paired with Avacyn, because she can attack with impunity if she is indestructible. Even if we don't end up getting a lot of use out of the mana-reducer, the attacking ability is pretty good, especially with its evasion.

Rush of Blood - So,
Berserk was a pretty good card, right? Sure,
Rush of Blood doesn't give our dude trample, but at uncommon, it is going to be accessible, which
Berserk really isn't. Also, I can use
Rush of Blood in Ruhan, which isn't true of
Berserk, making
Rush of Blood a far superior card (jokes are funny). Anyway, in a world with both the
Fireshrieker and
Inquisitor's Flail, Rush for Blood seems like a solid win condition on any creature five power and up. OCTOUPLE STRIKE!

14)
Terminus - Originally, the card in this slot was
Infinite Reflection, because at first glance that card seemed like it would be really sweet. As I thought more about it, I couldn't really think of any way to get much value out of it, or at least more than I could get with some other card. Just in case I was missing out on something awesome, I checked the old intertron for some ideas, and while searching forums, I mostly found people talking about how much they loved
Terminus, as it was spoiled with
Infinite Reflection. Even after searching harder, nothing I read made
Infinite Reflection that great. I wasn't even going to include
Terminus, as tuck effects tend to send me into a barbarian's rage (+4 strength!), but I can see how more serious folk would be excited at the thought of another copy of
Hallowed Burial.
Terminus is actually a fairly complex card, since it is not an auto-cast when the miracle occurs, unlike
Temporal Mastery or
Thunderous Wrath.

Exquisite Blood - This card is just, well, exquisite! To start off, it creates a back breaking causal-loop of doom with
Sanguine Bond.
Exquisite Blood will go straight into my
Kaervek the Merciless group-slug deck, as it relied on
Drain Life and
Soul Burn for the long-game survival plan.
Exquisite Blood will both double the life gain from those spells, and will turn any regular direct damage spells into a quasi-Drain Life, as long as they hit players. I really like it with cards like
Earthquake,
Hurricane, or my man Samuel L., AKA
Heartless Hidetsugu.

12)
Angel of Jubilation - I love me some boss abilities on a flying stick, and that is pretty much what
Angel of Jubilation is. It has a decent cost for mono-White decks, but will probably not hit play on turn four in multi-colored decks. The buff is a pretty nice perk, but the real meat of this character is the Linvalian lockdown ability this gal is rocking. So many decks rely on paying life or sacrificing creatures to function, like a
Ghave, Guru of Spores or
Selenia, Dark Angel deck, not to mention cards like
Griselbrand,
Necropotence, and oh, I dunno, FETCH LANDS! That's right, our opponent's
Arid Mesa and
Misty Rainforest are basically dead lands with
Angel of Jubilation on board, and anyone who plays against
Crucible of Worlds a lot will really appreciate that. I am betting this will see play in
Hokori, Dust Drinker type decks, and possibly
Grand Arbiter Augustin IV.

11) Alchemists' Refuge - This land has been getting a lot of buzz, and I think it is worthy of it, for the most part. When it comes to EDH, the effect the Refuge provides isn't all the difficult to come by, due to cards like
Leyline of Anticipation or
Vedalken Orrery. Even though it is technically more powerful, I feel like the UG color makes it inferior to
Winding Canyons in most decks. In UG decks, though, it is a good
Primeval Titan target, and will make decks like
Edric, Spymaster of Trest, even more powerful. I think it will end up in both my
Animar, Soul of Elements creatures-only deck, and my Riku of the Reflection CHAOS! deck that I wrote about a few months ago.

10)
Appetite for Brains - I have to say, this is probably the coolest card Wizards has printed in a while - it has a cool name, cool cost, cool effect, and cool flavor text. I especially like the flavor text in a contextual sense, as it is quite literally a ‘flavor' text.
Appetite for Brains is basically Inquisition of Kozilek's badass older brother, and I have a feeling this card will be popping up in all the formats. In Commander specifically, though, there is a much higher likelihood that you will see a four CMC or higher card in an opponent's hand. Exiling the card makes Appetite insane, especially considering how easy it is to regrow cards like
Time Warp. You could really play this card in any Black deck, but I think someone like
Lich Lord" href="/db/magic_single_card.asp?cn=Dralnu,

Cathars' Crusade - This card literally blows Door of Destiny of its hinges. Because it only checks creatures entering the battlefield, and not an actual casting of creature spells, any token entering play will buff all of your creatures, including the creature that triggered the ability. It has obvious strengths with token decks, but I am more interested in adding it to
Melira, Sylvok Outcast combos in my Ghave deck. It interacts with persist for infinite shenanigans; watch out for undying though, because
Cathars' Crusade actually turns it off from the get-go.

Sigarda, Host of Herons - Some may be surprised Sigarda is so low on the list; I may be wrong about her place here, but I am not all that excited about Sigorney, I mean, Sigarda, when it comes to EDH. I suspect she will be big in sanctioned formats, but in EDH she is just another angel. She would be a good choice for GW voltron, kind of like Thrun meets Eight-and-a-Half Tails. I like how she is a better version of
Tajuru Preserver, which was only playable because annihilator is messed up. I think she will end up as more of a lieutenant in an
Uril, the Miststalker deck, but that is just me.

Soul of the Harvest -
Primordial Sage is already a great card that I use in a few decks, and
Soul of the Harvest is way better in pretty much every way. Not only is it a lot larger than the Sage, (with trample,) for the same mana cost, it will trigger when creatures are cheated into play when the Sage won't.
Soul of the Harvest will make a great addition to Mayael, and will get really sick with some
Cloudstone Curio shenanigans, or perhaps a
Palinchron combo in Animar or Riku.

Harvester of Souls -
Harvester of Souls is an interesting new card, and it goes really well in so many deck archetypes. It beats
Soul of the Harvest because it will simply draw more cards in a game, since it counts any non-token creature that dies, and not just our own. The applications for this creature are practically endless, but in particular, I want it for my
Karador, Ghost Chieftain deck, as well as my Grimgrin
Zombie Apocalypse combo deck. Since it is a
Demon,
Harvester of Souls will go well with Kaalia as well. Harvester should be packed with cards like
Grave Pact or
Damnation for maximum effectiveness.

Dark Impostor - Oh man, this thing is so cool! Assassin creature type is easily the awesome-est of all possible tribes, and vampires have a lot of lords that make them even better. The art is actually really engaging, especially with the chiaroschuro contrasting in the colors. This creature didn't get to the five slot because of its flavor though - this thing is going to be really hard to deal with! The repetitive exile ability is almost unheard of, especially since there is no reference to returning them to play once the Impostor bites it.
Karn Liberated is the closest analogy to this card that I can think of, and he can only do it once a turn, twice if you are tricksy. In a color that can routinely pump out twelve black mana with
Cabal Coffers, I can see the Impostor dominating the table and stealing sweet abilities like Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker's copy tech! We can run this guy in
Olivia Voldaren, and if Olivia dies, we can remove her in response to gain a functional copy of our general. I am also putting the Impostor in my
Kaervek the Merciless deck, because he is an amazing piece of removal. Basically, the
Dark Impostor will be like the
Rune-Scarred Demon - in every Black EDH that will ever be built. Okay, that might be a tad hyperbolic, but you get the idea.

4)
Malignus -
Malignus is a total house in Commander.
Malignus owns in the same way
Serra Ascendant takes advantage of the high starting life total, and the way
Consecrated Sphinx takes advantage of the multiplayer environment - it doesn't matter if you have forty life, or six-thousand life, it will always bring you down, and if you aren't the person at the table with the massive life total, it will one shot you while the guy with the Kitchen Finks/Melira, Sylvok Outcast combo laughs dismissively. The funniest part about
Malignus is the crazy synergies built into AVR to make him a one shot all the time; consider casting
Rush of Blood on a
Malignus, or dropping
Gisela, Blade of Goldnight and attacking with it.
Malignus is good with other damage doubling effects as well, like
Double Cleave or
Furnace of Rath, and I would really like to give it life link with a
Basilisk Collar, or better yet, a
Loxodon Warhammer. Any Red deck that is interested in dealing damage will love
Malignus, but I especially like him in Kiki-Jiki!

Gisela, Blade of Goldnight - First things first: I actually think Gisela is my favorite card in the set, even if I don't think she is the best (or even second best). I don't find any of the other Boros generals particularly interesting, except for maybe
Brion Stoutarm. Before Gisela was spoiled, however, I did build a
Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer Relentless Assault deck, mostly because his attack bonus sort of went well with multiple attack phases. I didn't end up writing about it, and I am glad I didn't because Gisela is the perfect fit for the general of the deck. Other cards that are good in Gisela decks include Earthquake-esque spells,
Furnace of Rath effects, and other symmetrical damage cards like
Repercussion. As I mentioned in the Mayael article from last week, Gisela would make a great addition to really any RW based deck, including Ruhan or
Uril, the Miststalker.

Bruna, Light of Alabaster - Bruna is the legend from Avacyn Restored that I expect to get the most play as a general. Her ability is highly reminiscent of Zur, the Enchanter - a notoriously powerful commander - but she is scaled back a bit, if for nothing else than lacking Black in her mana. For me, the ideal Bruna deck would want to cheat
Eldrazi Conscription into play while enchanting the general with
False Demise, backed up by an
Academy Rector and Sovereign of Alara. The deck would also want cards like Intuition and
Three Dreams, which are basically the same spell in a Bruna deck - tutor three enchantments, and then attack or block with the Light of Alabaster, putting them into play from hand or graveyard. The fact that she has vigilance goes real well with the fact her ability activates on attack or block, making her even more difficult to kill with the right tools. She is also quite good as a member of the other ninety-nine, and I wouldn't be surprised if I saw her in Hannah, the Ship's Navigator, or
Rafiq of the Many decks.

Cavern of Souls - Finally, we come to the number one card in Avacyn Restored -
Cavern of Souls. The only thing we have to do to make this card amazing is name the creature type of your general, and not only will we be able to better cast our general, it won't be countered, which is especially important against
Spell Crumple and Hinder, not to mention cards like
Desertion or
Spelljack.
Cavern of Souls gets a lot better in tribal decks, but even in my
Omnath, Locus of Mana deck, there are quite a few elementals that would also love to be uncounterable, like
Avenger of Zendikar or
Regal Force. I think that most multi-color decks will benefit immensely from this card, as will many dual and single color builds.
There were many other cool cards in Avacyn Restored, but those will have to wait for later days. Next week, I will unveil the Gisela deck I have been working on since she was spoiled, sporting
Malignus, no doubt. Kaalia and Bruna are built too, and as you can see, many of my older builds are receiving an influx of tasty treats, catered by Herons of Innistrad! You can check out all my previous articles by clicking on my name at the top of the article. It is super handy!
Thanks for reading!
